Kansas: A territory located in the geographical center of the United States of America, having entered the Union as the 34th state in the year 1861 AD. State Motto: “To the stars through difficulty”. State Flower: Sunflower. State Bird: Meadowlark. State Tree: Cottonwood. The name Kansas is derived from the Native-American tribe known as the Kanza, or Kansas Indians. Topographical features of the state include the ever-changing colors reflected on the earthen sea of the great Flint Hills, the seemingly endless plateau of the great western plains and the clear horizon making visible the sun from its rising to its setting. Pioneered in the 1800’s by innovative people with strong determination in the face of a harsh environment, Kansas is now known for it’s abundant wheat crops, aircraft industry, and numerous successful world-renown businesses including The Coleman Company, Pizza Hut Corporation and Koch Industries.
